1. Agnes1 Cronin (Morgan, #2). Born 10 January 1871 Pulaski County, Indiana. Married Plummer Emanuel Gastineau, son of Levi Gastineau and Rachel Hatfield, 5 February 1894 Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana [Works Progress Administration, Indiana, Index to Supplemental Records, Marriage Transcript, Marion County, Indiana, 1882-1906 (np: Indiana WPA, 1939), Book 4, p. 255]. Died 28 January 1944 at 215 N. Tacoma Ave, Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana [Holy Cross Cemetery (Indianapolis, Indiana), Burial records]. Buried 1 February 1944 at Holy Cross Cemetery (Lot 158 N. 1/2, Sec. D), Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana [Holy Cross Cemetery, Burial records]; parish was: St. Philip Neri. She resided in 1932 at 215 N. Tacoma Ave, Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana [Polk’s Indianapolis City Directory, 1932 edition, p. 556, listed as “wid Plummer E.”].
Generation Two
2. Morgan2 Cronin. Born 1822? County Cork, Ireland [U.S. 1860 Census,Pulaski County Indiana, Salem Twp, Francesville, p. 116]; he and Johannah Hayes (see #3) obtained a marriage license 22 October 1858 Tippecanoe County, Indiana [Tippecanoe County, Indiana, Marriage Records]. He died 17 February 1887 Attica, Fountain County, Indiana [Health Officer, Fountain County, Indiana], apparently on the job; the original death record was apparently lost or destroyed. Morgan's baptismal name was "Michael" [Indiana WPA, Index to Supplemental Records, Marriage Transcript, Marion County, Indiana, 1882-1906, Book 4, p. 255].
Family tradition says he emigrated from Ireland to Port of New Orleans as a “young man” (which would probably be c1840) with a brother (possibly named “Daniel”), who stayed behind in Lousiana while he went to Indiana to work for the railroad.
The following ad appeared in the Boston Pilot (Boston, Massachusetts) on 23 March 1844: “Information wanted of Daniel and Michael Cronin, natives of the County Cork. About four years ago they were in Boston. Their brother, Patrick, is now in Boston, and is anxious to hear from them. He can be found at No. 2, Clark St., Boston, Mass.” [Ruth-Ann M. A comment regarding the grave markers of the children of Morgan Cronin who are all buried together at Holy Cross in Indianapolis:
The markers are small, all of the same very plain style, and all in a row -- and they all appear to have been installed at the same time. The cemetery office has no record of exactly when they were installed, but I suspect this was done at a later date -- perhaps after Frank's death in 1958 -- and that whoever was responsible wasn't really sure about the birth dates.
3. Johannah2 Hayes (Unknown, #6). Born 1841 probably in Killarney, County Kerry, Ireland [U.S. 1860 Census, Pulaski County, Indiana, Salem Twp, Francesville, p. 116]. Died 22 March 1891 at 61 N. State St, Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana [Holy Cross Cemetery, Burial records]. Buried in Crown Hill Cemetery (Lot 744, Secc 4-E) , Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana [Holy Cross Cemetery, Burial records]. Her grave marker says: "Johnannah Cronin / 1841 - 1891."
The following is taken from her burial record:
Cronin, Johanna, age 50.
Address: 61 N. State.
Died March 22, 1891, interred March 28, 1891.
Kin: Michael J. Cronin.
Undertaker: R. L. & H.
She arrived on 20 August 1853 at the Port of Boston, Massachusetts, traveling with her mother [Supplemental Index to Passenger Lists of Vessels Arriving at Atlantic and Gulf Ports (Excluding New York), 1820-74, Roll 75 (LDS 418,235)]. The record states:
Hays, Johanna. Accompanied by __________.
Age: 11 yrs.
Nationality: Irish.
Last permanent residence: Ireland.
Port of Entry: Boston, Mass.
Vessel: North America.
Date: 20 August 1853. [B2298, p. 1].
Obviously, an 11-year-old girl would not be traveling alone, if it could be helped; it's almost certain that Johannah was accompanied by her mother, Ellen. The two women migrated to Indiana sometime in the next five years, but I’ve never figured out why. (Did they already know Morgan Cronin’s family back in Cork or Kerry? Was Johannah’s mother hunting for a husband for her? (But then, why not stay in Boston. . . ?) Johannah moved the family to Indianapolis shortly after Morgan’s death, presumably so they could find work.
She appears in the 1890 Indianapolis City Directory: Cronin, Johannah (widow Morgan) 209 Meek St, Indianapolis.
Generation Three
6. ---(?)---3 Hayes. Married Ellen Unknown (see #7). Died before 1853 County Kerry, Ireland.
Children of ---(?)---3 Hayes and Ellen ---(?)--- (see #7) were:
3 i. Johannah2 Hayes.
7. Ellen3 ---(?)---. Born 1800? Ireland [U.S. 1870 Census, Pulaski County, Indiana, Salem Twp, p. 508]. Married Unknown Hayes (see #6). No death or interrment record has been located, but she either died soon after the 1880 census in Pulaski County, or she moved with the family to Indianapolis c1888 and died there. She was listed as a nurse in the 1870 census. She does not appear (that I can find) on the 1860 census for Pulaski County, Indiana.
